So it was the spring of 2004 and my dad and I went for a “ride” in Ocean City Maryland on Easter Weekend. During this ride he set up a meeting with a realtor to show us some restaurant spots just for fun. When we were done my dad turns to me and says, “do you want to have a restaurant at the beach?” With out even thinking about it I replied, “Sure, why not?!”. I went back to Baltimore, gave in my 2 weeks at the hospital, and 6 weeks later Memorial Day weekend of 2004, we had our grand opening!
I could not have done any of it without the support of my mom and dad, who would work at Goolee’s in the early years. Deeply routed in the restaurant business, they taught me all the ropes to stay in business for all these years, through the 2008 recession, we went backwards not forwards, and with an 7 year stint working at Under Armour headquarters in the off season back in Baltimore. We made it through some very difficult years.
In 2014 – after 11 seasons I sold the Ocean City, MD location to move it to our current home in Rehoboth Beach DE.
In 2016 we reconverted one of the dinning rooms to a little gift shop. Now I’m like a mini Cracker Barrel! I do breakfast and you can shop wile drinking one of our famous bloody Marys. We also started doing Greek Dinners. Mom and dad do all the cooking and they are an enormous hit. Whether its mom’s musaka or dad’s augolemono soup – everything is a hit!
Lastly we have recently got into catering – and that has been a wonderful experience for me.
Never would I imagined the ride I took with dad on a rainy day so long ago would have evolved into such a wonderful adventure.
